Local fisherman awarded for biggest fish catch weighing 28 kilograms
February 10, 2018. The Waterfront Market, Dubai’s unique destination for quality fresh food, has awarded local fisherman Jassim Mohammad Ali Abdullah Al Marzouqi the prize for catching the biggest King Fish fish of the season weighing 28 kilograms. The ‘Biggest Catch” of the Season’ is a Waterfront Market yearly initiative aimed at showcasing the diversity and richness of Dubai’s fishing culture and heritage as well as its coastal communities and marine environment, which is home to more
than 300 species of fish.
Dubai is home to a wide range of species of fish including King Fish, Queen Fish, Mackerel, Barracuda, Dorado, Yellow Fin Tuna, Grouper and Cobia, to name a few. Dubai’s population growth, economic advancement and growing importance in global tourism and trade has led to an increase in the demand for seafood which has resulted in the fishing industry’s expansion, including substantial investment in fishing fleets and equipment.
Lachlan Gyde, Executive Director, Ithra Dubai, said: “The Waterfront Market is home to the largest fish and integrated fresh food market in the region, providing an extensive variety and abundance of freshly-caught fish. We are proud to share the achievements of our fishermen partners who brave the open seas to provide our customers with the best and freshest catch from the sea to their plates”, Gyde added, “Through this initiative, we honor Dubai’s heritage and continue to find ways to encourage and support the fishing communities to increase business activities. The Waterfront Market’s state-of-the-art fish market and auction area provide the ideal market place for fresh catch and the only place to find the biggest catch of the season.”
In an event to mark the first ever “The Biggest Catch” for the 2018 Season”, the Waterfront Market held an inaugural barbecue for the fishermen, retailers and public by the sea on the Waterfront Market Promenade accompanied by music and celebrations where Jassim Mohammad Ali Abdullah Al Marzouqi was awarded the 2018’s “Biggest Catch” trophy and prize in recognition of his catch. Gyde concluded: “Fishing is an integral and traditional aspect of life in the UAE where Emirati Nationals and residents are naturally connected to the sea. Through this celebration, we hope to preserve our fishing heritage and keep it flourishing. Aside from the fish market, the Waterfront Market also houses the fruit & vegetables, meat and dry goods markets. These markets coupled with diverse retail and food and beverage outlets are our way of providing value, variety, experiences and convenience to our communities and customers to allow them to truly enjoy freshness and a healthy lifestyle.”
The Waterfront Market has hosted a number of events at its premises and will continue the “Biggest Catch” and other exciting events in the coming years.
